HERS-SA is proud to present an overview of what we have achieved since October 2002. 
This is thanks to all our Members, members, the higher education institutions in South and Southern Africa and the financial support from the Andrew W Mellon Foundation and the Carnegie Corporation of New York:
Month Activity
September 08

The sixth HERS-SA ACADEMY 2008 takes place from 21-27 to 15 September 2008 at the University of Cape Town Graduate School of Business, Waterfront, Cape Town. This year a total of 73 delegates from all over South Africa, including nine from the USA, one from Malawi and nine funded by the Carnegie Corporation of New York from Uganda, Tanzania, Ghana and Nigeria, gathered together to share experiences and to hear from experts in the field and learn from each other. A total of 37 speakers and facilitators generously shared their time and experience in a variety of forums thus providing not only information, but mentoring and exposure to role models which are critical elements of the ACADEMY experience.  Four of the international speakers, Dr. Judith White and Makeba Clay from the USA; Professor Akosua Ampofo from Ghana and Professor Funmi Bickersteth from Nigeria participated for the whole week which further enhanced access to senior women in the sector for other delegates

HERS-SA EMERGING WOMEN'S ACADEMY for women students takes place from Friday 18 - Sunday 20 July in Cape Town.

HERS-SA's participation in the Women in Higher Education Managment Network (WHEM) international study : 'Gender and senior management in Higher Education: cross cultural perspectives' (See December 2007 below for more details). HERS-SA's data is included in two conference papers: in Madrid at Women's Worlds 08 on 6 July; and in Perth at the Engendering Leadership Conference on 30 July. We could not travel to Madrid due to lack of funding but we participated by making written submission to the project meeting that took place on 5 July.

HERS-SA Annual General Meeting takes place. HERS-SA is pleased to welcome new Management Board Member, Ingrid Fourie, and new Member, Firoza Patel from UNISA. The current Management Board Members, Lesley Shackleton, Ingrid Fourie, Penny Franz, Sarah Riordan and Desiree Simonis are re-appointed for a further year.

HERS-SA's participation in the Women in Higher Education Managment Network (WHEM) international study : 'Gender and senior management in Higher Education: cross cultural perspectives' (See December 2007 below for more details). Submission of 17 interview summaries to Australian Lead Researcher

"CONSCIOUS STRATEGIES WORKSHOP FOR WOMEN WORKSHOP" takes place. This 3-day workshop was co-designed by HERS-SA and USB-Executive Development, University of Stellenbosch Business School. The workshop was delivered as a series of work sessions aimed at making women more aware of issues affecting their careers. They also had to opportunity of reflect on their personal career and life choices,to develop strategies for their future success and to align their personal development with the strategy of their company.

Announcement of HERS-SA EMERGING WOMEN'S ACADEMY, an exciting opportunity for women students, which will take place from Friday 18 - Sunday 20 July 2008

HERS-SA's participation in the Women in Higher Education Managment Network (WHEM) international study : 'Gender and senior management in Higher Education: cross cultural perspectives' (see December 2007 below for more details). Finalisation of 17 in depth interviews with senior leaders in higher education in South Africa.

South African Women in Science & Engineering (SAWISE) "Early Career Adjustment Workshop" takes place. The workshop was facilitated by Dr Sarah Riordan of HERS-SA

March 08

"Institutional Cultures and Higher Education Leadership: Where are the Women?" Conference takes place on 27 & 28 March at the University of Cape Town. The conference was a joint initiative of HERS-SA, the Department of Education, The Council on Higher Education (CHE), and Higher Education South Africa (HESA)and attracted 120 delegates including Vice Chancellors and senior executives from across South Africa and other African countries. The Conference was convened to focus on the paucity of women at senior levels in higher education. It resulted in a Declaration calling for a significant improvement in the representation of women in senior academic, administrative and executive leadership positions in all higher education institutions. The Minister of Education, Naledi Pandor, received the Declaration on behalf of the Department of Education. The Declaration was also presented to HESA and CHE.

Sarah Riordan, HERS-SA Board Member, obtains a PhD: "Career Psychology factors as antecedents of career success of women academics in South Africa"

HERS-SA announces participation in a Women in Higher Education Managment Network (WHEM) international study provisionally entitled: 'Gender and senior management in Higher Education: cross cultural perspectives'. The nine countries included in the study are Australia, United Kingdom, New Zealand, Ireland, Finland, Sweden, Portugal, Hungary and South Africa. Dr Sarah Riordan, a HERS-SA Board Member is the research responsible this this study in South Africa.

November 07 Announcement of a National Higher Education Conference "Institutions Cultures and Higher Education Leadership: Where are the Women?" a joint initiative of HERS-SA, the Department of Education, The Council on Higher Education, and Higher Education South Africa to take place in Cape Town on Thursday 27 and Friday 28 March 2008. The Conference will address issues of inclusion, institutional culture and the development of leadership potential.
October 07 One-day HERS-SA "Presentation Skills Workshop" takes place at Stellenbosch University

The fifth HERS-SA ACADEMY 2007 takes place from 9 to 15 September 2007 at the University of Cape Town Graduate School of Business, Waterfront, Cape Town. This year 6 countries were represented.   A total of 80 delegates including 69 from all over South Africa plus 11 from Angola, Uganda, Tanzania, Ghana, and Nigeria gathered together to share experiences, hear from experts in the field and learn from each other.   In addition Dr Blenda Wilson, Chair-elect of HERS USA, joined the delegates for the whole week.   Over 37 speakers and facilitators generously shared their experience and knowledge and thus provided a broad platform for the delegates to engage with challenges in the sector and interact with role models.

Two-day HERS-SA "Building Research Capacity Workshop" takes place at the University of Cape Town Graduate School of Business.

One-day HERS-SA "Self-Management Workshop" takes place at Stellenbosch University

August 07

HERS-SA participated in the South African Women in Science & Engineering (SAWISE) Women's Day event. A short presentation by Sarah Riordan on work centrality and multiple roles preceded a lively discussion on Positive Spillover which is the new understanding of the positive transference of skills and social capital between work and family roles. Small group discussion produced a list of at least 20 different competencies that are being used across boundaries by academic women.

With sponsorship from the Ford Foundation and the Institute of International Education, two members of the HERS-SA Management Board, Desiree Simonis and Sarah Riordan, attended a meeting of the Partnership for Higher Education in Nairobi, Kenya to inform participants about HERS-SA and meet with colleagues in East Africa

HERS-SA receives a further grant from the Carnegie Corporation of New York to facilitate the attendance of women from Tanzania, Uganda, Nigeria and Ghana at the HERS-SA ACADEMY (2007-2009).   This grant will also facilitate the expansion of the HERS-SA network into Africa.

HERS USA strengthens its bonds with HERS-SA by facilitating a further grant from Andrew W Mellon for 6 South African participants to attend the 2007 Summer Institute at Bryn Mawr College, Philadelphia, USA

HERS USA also assists HERS-SA by facilitating a grant from Andrew W Mellon to upgrade the HERS-SA website and database

November 06 HERS-SA collaborates with the University of Stellenbosch Business School (USB-ED) to host a Business Women's Academy in October 2007.

September 06 The 4th HERS-SA ACADEMY 2006  takes place at the University of Cape Town's Graduate School of Business.   82 delegates from 13 different countries attend the most successful ACADEMY yet.  This includes 8 delegates and 2 presenters funded by the Carnegie Corporation of New York from Nigeria, Ghana, Uganda and Tanzania.   The ACADEMY was also attended by Dr Judith White, current Executive President of HERS (USA), Stacey Farnum, Director Alumnae Relations from HERS (USA) and Dorothy Garland, Deputy Director General of the Association of Commonwealth Universities, United Kingdom.
