NATIONAL HIGHER EDUCATION CONFERENCE:
"INSTITUTIONAL CULTURES and HIGHER EDUCATION LEADERSHIP:
WHERE ARE THE WOMEN?"
Thursday 27 and Friday 28 March 2008
Middle Campus, University of Cape Town, South Africa
The conference was a joint initiative of HERS-SA, the Department of Education, The Council on Higher Education (CHE), and Higher Education South Africa (HESA)and attracted 120 delegates including Vice Chancellors and senior executives from across South Africa and other African countries. The Conference was convened to focus on the paucity of women at senior levels in higher education. It resulted in a DECLARATION calling for a significant improvement in the representation of women in senior academiC, administrative and executive leadership positions in all higher education institutions. The Minister of Education, Naledi Pandor, received the Declaration on behalf of the Department of Education. The Declaration was also presented to HESA and CHE.
HERS-SA is pleased to announce that we are participating in an international study provisionally entitled: ‘Gender and senior management in Higher Education: cross cultural perspectives’. The study is led by Dr. Kate White from Monash University, Australia and Prof. Barbara Bagilhole, Loughborough University, United Kingdom and the nine countries included the study (Australia, UK, New Zealand, Ireland, Finland, Sweden, Portugal, Hungary and South Africa) are collectively known as the Women in Higher Education (WHEM) Network.
Following a literature review the study was divided into three phases including:
Phase 1 (completed): Collation of data about the number of women holding senior positions in universities in each of the participating countries
Phase 2 (currently underway): Qualitative interviews with (past and current) Vice-Chancellors, Deputy Vice-Chancellors, Registrars, Executive Directors and Deans about the skills required for effective senior management of universities, particularly teaching, research, management and leadership skills.
Phase 3: Development of a tentative skills benchmark as a tool for assessing future incumbents of these managerial positions (based on the interview outcomes).
The findings will be discussed with interested HE bodies in participating countries, presented at conferences, and included in various publications.
Dr. Sarah Riordan, a HERS-SA Board member, is the researcher responsible for this study in South Africa.
HERS-SA PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITIES in 2008
The HERS-SA ACADEMY SCHOLARSHIP FUND was launched in 2006 through an initiative by Aderonke Akeredolu and Oludolape Amole from Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Nigeria who were delegates at the HERS-SA ACADEMY 2006. In appreciation of the opportunity afforded to them by attending the ACADEMY, their aim was to provide funds for the ACADEMY fee for future delegates who did not have access to the necessary financial support.
Following the launch of the HERS-SA ACADEMY SCHOLARSHIP FUND, donations have been received from other HERS-SA ACADEMY 2006 and 2007 delegates and HERS-SA ACADEMY 2006, 2007 & 2008 presenters in their personal capacities.
We are delighted to report that there were sufficient funds to support one delegate’s fee at ACADEMY 2008.
HERS-SA would welcome contributions to the ACADEMY SCHOLARSHIP FUND. Please contact Penny Franz on email: penny@chec.ac.za
